Wilderness Awareness School is pleased to announce the following openings for 2012:

NEW! Summer Camp Lead Instructor (Summer/Full-Time)

Location:
Local parks around the Puget Sound area including Olympia and the foothills of the Cascade Mountains

Start Date:
Required staff training week is June 18th- 22nd, 9:00am – 4:00 pm each day. Locations vary.

Camp Dates and Hours
Camps begin June 25 and continue through August 24, with no camps the week of July 2-6. Staff will work an average of 5 or 6 camp weeks during this time. Some staff may work fewer weeks than this. Daily hours at day camps and half-day camps are 8:00am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Overnight camps run from Sunday afternoon through Friday morning.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and instruct small groups of students in weeklong day camps (ages 6-12) or half-day camps (ages   4-6) using Wilderness Awareness School’s model of mentoring.
  • Potentially work with teens in overnight camps or expeditions (dependent on experience).
  • Bring creativity and inspiration to the task of facilitating nature connection for youth in the context of city and state parks, as well as at Wilderness Awareness School property. Work within all policies of the school and of the parks governing use of and interaction with the landscape, wildlife, plants, etc.
  • Inspire youth to find their personal gifts through their connections with nature.
  • Support assistant (volunteer) instructors in learning more about working with youth in nature.
  • Solicit, receive and provide feedback in a clear and appropriate manner.
  • Be familiar with and follow all school safety and risk management policies.

Qualifications:

  • Participation in Wilderness Awareness School's "Art of Mentoring" or “Coyote Mentoring” programs or the equivalent training in this style of mentoring.
  • Must have current certification in Wilderness First Aid and CPR, and have a valid driver's license. (Wilderness First Aid training must be completed by June 15 and must be scheduled by May 1st)
  • A background check is required.

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest hazards, mammals, tracking, edible/medicinal plants, navigation without map/compass, field ecology, trees, survival techniques, and birds/birdsong
  • Experience as a naturalist instructor working with youth in an outdoor setting
  • Participated in Wilderness Awareness School's Residential Program, Community School, and/or Kamana Naturalist Training program

Compensation/Benefits:

  • Dependent upon experience
  • Base pay for first year staff is $480/week for day and half-day camps, and $720/week for overnight camps
  • Pay for first year staff at summer camp training week is $420
  • Potential fall employment opportunities

Summer Camp Assistant Instructor (Volunteer/Summer/Part-Time)

Summer Camp Volunteers act as Assistant Instructors for our summer camps and receive training in youth mentoring. These volunteers get to choose at least 2 weeks in the summer to come to camp and support our instructors leading and playing games and activities. Other perks may also be included.
