Wilderness Survival Walkabout Expedition

Ages 18+, June 22-28, 2014 Explore the Central Washington high desert, experiencing the freedom of walking across a landscape and trusting the earth to provide for all of your needs! During this week-long course, you will learn and apply wilderness survival skills as the opportunity and need arises. Learning navigation techniques and fire-making, finding and constructing shelter, locating wild edibles and water by identifying of indicator species; this challenging wilderness survival course gives you the opportunity to experience the abundance nature provides to those with the awareness to notice. Wilderness Survival Basics

Ages 18+, Oct. 25-26, 2014 This course will be a solid introduction to the skills and knowledge necessary to live through a short-term wilderness survival situation – under 72 hours. Topics will include basic gear that you need, survival priorities, and most importantly, how to maintain an upright mind. We will teach essential skills like building a fire, making a life-saving shelter, purifying water, navigation, hygiene, and wild edibles. More details & online registration

Bushcraft Basics

Ages 18+, TBA The ultimate expression of freedom is the lack of reliance on items you can’t produce yourself. This is the essence of Bushcraft—what you need to know to craft and successfully use the tools for living in the Bush. Each skill that we teach will have a practical application. Theory will be put to the test. You will learn fundamental skills in how to live closer to nature. Instead of just surviving, you will learn to live and thrive with the natural materials that surround you. more details and registration information

On the Edge: Basecamp Survival

Ages 18+, TBA

This weeklong course is designed to give participants basic wilderness survival training, as well as longer-term primitive living skills. This is a skills-heavy course that is based out of a central location; we will take day trips to gather food and materials. As this is a survival trip there will likely be times of feast, and also famine. Expect to have your edges pushed and your survival skill tool basket filled!

36-Hour Survival Overnight

Ages 18+, TBA

The first 36 hours of an emergency are crucial for your survival. With minimal gear, we will set off into the wilderness on a survival trek. We sleep in hand-made shelters, make fire with minimal modern gear, cover the hazards of drinking unpurified water, and dine on in-season wild edibles. Nature Skills Weeklong Workshop

Ages 18+, TBA

Spend a week exploring the natural world and learning outdoor survival skills with Wilderness Awareness School’s most experienced instructors.

Classroom instruction will be paired with mentored dirt time in the field where we take theory into practice tracking, birding, studying plants, and exploring the natural world. It’s a wonderful mix of nature awareness, outdoor survival skills and wilderness survival skills training.

Art of Flintknapping Weekend

Ages 18+ TBA

Participants will come away with the basics of flintknapping: material selection, pressure flaking, percussion flaking, notching, and hafting. We will start with the fundamentals and everyone will make several functional pieces. Our material of choice will be obsidian. This hands-on class will open your eyes to a new world of working with stone.

Wooden Bow Making

Ages 18+, TBA

Can only woodland elves and mountain men make their own bow? It turns out that through hard work and focus, you too can learn how to turn a stick into a bow in a weekend! Join us and you will learn the ancient art of tillering, fundamentals of woodworking, using tools efficiently, and tapping into our capacity for listening to wood. By the end of the weekend you will have made your own wooden longbow with carved bow handles, as well as your own bowstrings!

Kamana Home Study Course The Kamana Naturalist Training Program is a comprehensive home study course that covers the naturalist background needed to engage in the wilderness arts, including wilderness survival skills and primitive living skills, wildlife tracking, bird language, traditional herbalism, and naturalist mentoring. During this short course you will experience two weeks of awareness exercises and six areas of ecological study using a field guide and audio series narrated by Jon Young.
