Our Philosophy

What do you remember about nature from your childhood?
Likely it's about a special place that you would go and share with friends - making forts, climbing trees and more - all while getting muddy and wet, in all kinds of weather.
We bring these kinds of adventures to kids today, along with instructors who know a lot about nature and use great skill in reconnecting kids with the wonder of the world around them. We do this through stories, hands-on skills like fire-making, responsible introduction of wild edible plants and their poisonous look-alikes, as well as things most adults don't even know like the arts of wildlife tracking and bird language interpretation.
All of these skills are doorways into exploration of nature, and ultimately ourselves. The same confidence that kids acquire in learning about the hazards of nature and how to work with them translates into the rest of their lives and how they approach healthy risk-taking and learning in general. We look forward to the day when these kind of nature adventures are happening again spontaneously for kids in neighborhoods everywhere!
Advanced Survival Overnight Camp
I love the informal structure – so unlike other camps… The staff show quiet engagement with the children, and respect for them and their abilities. -Annie Kennedy
This camp adds to the skills and experience of our Survival Overnight Camp, and offers an in-depth first experience for older teens who have not participated in programs with us previously. We offer in this camp many opportunities to practice safe knife use, fire-making, primitive cooking, bullfrog hunting, basket-making and a variety of other skills, taking all of them to an advanced level that is appropriate to participants age and experience. The village feel of this camp is notable, and participants of this camp connect with each other deeply through profound shared experience. Of the five nights, three will be spent in a natural shelter “village” created by the participants, where all will prepare food together and sleep in individual or group shelters.
The Advanced Survival Overnight is a camp for participants who are socially mature and seriously interested in expanding their knowledge and skills of wilderness survival and community building. We will not only be surviving, but thriving together as we experience the gifts that each person brings to community, and that the natural world offers to us all.
Important Information
Previous experience with Wilderness Awareness School programs is encouraged, though not required.
- During the Advanced Survival Overnight Camp, we will be spending nights in the woods without tents. Campers must be prepared for and comfortable with this arrangement.
- Overnight Camp begins at 1pm on Sunday and ends at 12pm on Friday. Parents are encouraged to arrive at 11 a.m. on Friday.
- All youth overnight participants must return a signed Physician’s Medical Form by June 1. This is for the safety of our participants and our organization. Completion of this form will require a physical exam completed within one year of the course date, and an appointment with that physician for the form to be filled out. We appreciate your understanding.
ParentMap, the award-winning monthly magazine and website, has surveyed its readers on the best businesses and resources for kids and families in the Puget Sound region.
