Advanced Survival Overnight Camp

Campers and counselors sitting around fire circle at Wilderness Awareness campI love the informal structure – so unlike other camps… The staff show quiet engagement with the children, and respect for them and their abilities. -Annie Kennedy

This camp adds to the skills and experience of our Survival Overnight Camp, and offers an in-depth first experience for older teens who have not participated in programs with us previously. We offer in this camp many opportunities to practice safe knife use, fire-making, primitive cooking, bullfrog hunting, basket-making and a variety of other skills, taking all of them to an advanced level that is appropriate to participants age and experience. The village feel of this camp is notable, and participants  of this camp connect with each other deeply through profound shared experience. Of the five nights, three will be spent in a natural shelter “village” created by the participants, where all will prepare food together and sleep in individual or group shelters.

The Advanced Survival Overnight is a camp for participants who are socially mature and seriously interested in expanding their knowledge and skills of wilderness survival and community building. We will not only be surviving, but thriving together as we experience the gifts that each person brings to community, and that the natural world offers to us all.

Please Note: Participants who have parental permission may be presented with the opportunity to learn about and experience the respectful and responsible “harvest” of a larger mammal, such as a goat, calf or sheep. We provide this opportunity because it is not only an important skill for survival in the wild, but it also provides an opportunity for deeper connection with the source of food many of us eat in our daily lives as well. This is an edge-pushing experience for many, and we strive to infuse it with the utmost respect for both life and emotion. Parents will have an opportunity to give their permission for this activity prior to the start of camp, and participants who have parental permission will then be given the choice of whether to participate and to what degree. More details will be provided upon registration, and you can contact us with any questions at all about this sensitive topic.

Important Information

Previous experience with Wilderness Awareness School programs is encouraged, though not required.

  • During the Advanced Survival Overnight Camp, we  will be spending nights in the woods without tents. Campers must be prepared for and comfortable with this arrangement.
  • Overnight Camp begins at 1pm on Sunday and ends at 12pm on Friday. Parents are encouraged to arrive at 11 a.m. on Friday.
  • All youth overnight participants must return a signed Physician’s Medical Form by June 1. This is for the safety of our participants and our organization. Completion of this form will require a physical exam completed within one year of the course date, and an appointment with that physician for the form to be filled out. We appreciate your understanding.

2012 Golden TeddyParentMap, the award-winning monthly magazine and website, has surveyed its readers on the best businesses and resources for kids and families in the Puget Sound region.
