Our Philosophy

What do you remember about nature from your childhood?
Likely it's about a special place that you would go and share with friends - making forts, climbing trees and more - all while getting muddy and wet, in all kinds of weather.
We bring these kinds of adventures to kids today, along with instructors who know a lot about nature and use great skill in reconnecting kids with the wonder of the world around them. We do this through stories, hands-on skills like fire-making, responsible introduction of wild edible plants and their poisonous look-alikes, as well as things most adults don't even know like the arts of wildlife tracking and bird language interpretation.
All of these skills are doorways into exploration of nature, and ultimately ourselves. The same confidence that kids acquire in learning about the hazards of nature and how to work with them translates into the rest of their lives and how they approach healthy risk-taking and learning in general. We look forward to the day when these kind of nature adventures are happening again spontaneously for kids in neighborhoods everywhere!
Wild Sprouts: Farm and Forest Camp
Wilderness Awareness School has partnered together with Oxbow Farm, and we are serving up something very special this summer!
During this week of daily adventures your child will explore the edge where Farm and Forest meet. In addition to Wilderness Awareness School’s unique day camp experience learning about plants, mammals, tracking, birds and survival skills…we’re down on the farm!
Kids will make their own sun tea, fresh fruit popsicles, and farm burritos. They will dig roots and pick fruits, save, sow, and snack on seeds. On the final day, we will harvest produce for an end-of-week Happy Camper Farmers Market! Each day we enjoy storytelling under the Maple Tree, as well as songs, crafts, and play surrounding food, farm and forest life.
Our Wild Sprouts: Farm and Forest Camp is available for different age groups; 4-6 year olds and 7-12 year olds. Younger children have three weeks to choose from. Please note that one of these weeks is a full-day experience (9:00-3:00) a new offering for this age group in 2013!! This full day experience for the younger child is appropriate for those who are ready to not only be away from home, but also active and engaged for this length of time!
Some planned camp activities:
At the forest’s edge we search for wild plants that can be used for food by humans and animals.- In the hoop house we will explore such mysteries as: Why does a seed sprout?
- In the fields we will consider: How is a Chickadee like a Chicken?
- In the Living Playground we will explore the Vine Tunnel and the Runner Bean Teepee to experience what the world looks like from a caterpillar’s point of view.
- In the garden we will discover the answer to the perplexing question: What do you feed your pet earthworms anyway?
- And much more!
We invite your child to come and experience the joy of having their hands in good clean dirt while learning how we can care for our environment and ourselves in a sustainable way.
Camp is held at Oxbow Farm in the Snoqualmie Valley (about 15 minutes from Redmond). It is on a 120-acre property, with 20 acres of certified organic vegetables, berries and tree fruit in cultivation for the fresh market.
ParentMap, the award-winning monthly magazine and website, has surveyed its readers on the best businesses and resources for kids and families in the Puget Sound region.
For the second year in a row, our camps were voted best in two categories and we were awarded a 2012 Golden Teddy!
