Teen Overnight Expeditions (Summer – Part Time)

Come join Wilderness Awareness School’s summer programs and help bring sustenance and vitality to our students and staff.

We have Head Cook and Assistant Cook positions available for two different expeditions:

  1. Teen Wolf Tracking Expedition in the Cascade Mountains (50 people)
  • Prep and Packing July 29th –  August 2nd, 2024
  • 7 Days of backcountry cooking: August 3rd – August 10th, 2024
  • Clean up and Debrief August 10th – 11th, 2024
  1. Teen Salish Sea Expedition in the San Juan Islands (25 people)
  • Prep and Packing June 24th –  June 28th, 2024
  • 5 days of backcountry cooking: June 29th – July 5th, 2024
  • Clean up and Debrief July 6th, 2024

Home Base Location: Linne Doran, our land in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains located in Duvall, WA – 45 min. from Seattle

Responsibilities

Facilitate and implement all facets of meal delivery for a group of up to 42 teens and staff including:

  • Follow a pre-set menu with opportunities for creativity
  • Review and plan for special dietary needs and allergies of participants
  • Use natural, organic, and local ingredients as possible within budget
  • Purchase and lead packing of food in Duvall
  • Drive to backcountry camp, lead backcountry kitchen set up, and take down
  • Coordinate with the Expedition Director on the timing and delivery of meals
  • Food preparation, cooking, serving, and kitchen cleanup daily
  • Coordination and supervision of kitchen volunteers (including teens)
  • Maintain a high standard of organization and cleanliness in the backcountry kitchen
  • Monitoring of food supplies and efficient use of ingredients on hand
  • Restocking of food supplies as needed in town (1-hour drive from camp in the Cascades, no restocking for Salish)
  • Responsible budgeting, including the handling of money and receipts when relevant

Qualifications

  • Flexible, responsible, good-humored, and team-oriented
  • High level of skill with and commitment to healthy communication
  • Experience with backcountry camping and food service for large groups
  • Must enjoy being around teens and adults and talking about wildlife
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and willingness to work hard in a backcountry setting
  • Clean driving record and access to a personal vehicle or over 25 to drive school van7)
  • King County Food Worker Card required (easy to obtain)

Compensation/Benefits

Wolf Tracking Expedition

  • Car camping provided on-site and required
  • Salary exempt starting at $2040 for Head Cook
  • Salary exempt starting at $1161 for Assistant Cook

Salish Sea Expedition

  • Salary exempt starting at $1550 for Head Cook
  • Volunteer Assistant Cook
  • Minimalist backcountry camping on site is provided and required – arrival by boat!
