“In a scary world of too much technology, WAS has given so much light and hopefulness. Spending a day in the wilderness learning about his own self and nature, getting down right dirty and forging relationships is the absolute highlight of our sons week. He asked almost every day if it was Friday yet and it was all because of the team that creates wonder and supports growth in nature! Thank you all ❤️”
– Diandra Larkin, mother Eddie (age 5)
“WAS is an amazing place! I love witnessing the amount of confidence and comfort that my child shows in the outdoors. He values the wonder of nature and takes great pride in his adventures and accomplishments.”
– Amanda, mother of 6 year old student

Through play and exploration, our Roots and Wings program is where little nature lovers ages 4 to 6 build connections with plants, animals, the land, and each other. Highly-skilled instructors propel our youngest students into a lifelong relationship with the natural world. Through engaging nature activities–including songs, stories, nature walks, games, and flora/fauna observation–our youngest students are guided into experiences that help them deepen their connection to the earth, build resilience, and nurture their sense of belonging.
The curriculum includes:
- Circle time with songs and stories
- Nature walks on-trail and off-trail
- Building awareness for local plants and animals
- Games that increase sensory awareness, confidence, and teamwork
- Nature crafts
- Imaginative missions and challenges
Our Educational Philosophy
Our signature Coyote Mentoring methods draw the learning out of our students rather than forcing it in. Curiosity is strategically ignited, and mentors keep a keen eye on their students, looking for moments of awe and opportunities for passion to grow. Our curriculum focuses on:
- Providing fun, hands-on opportunities for children to get outside and to learn about the natural world
- Engaging play-based class content that adapts to the seasons, as well as to our students’ curiosities and interests
- Nurturing our students in their journey of learning and growth in nature while building social and emotional skills within a supportive community of students and staff
- Encouraging creative thinking rather than simply providing answers. Our experienced instructors help students develop problem-solving skills and critical thinking, fostering a deeper level of curiosity, learning, and connection.

Our Instructional Staff:
- Follow a targeted 1:8 adult to student ratio, and are supported by volunteers and apprentice instructors.
- Are trained as Coyote Mentors with current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications
- Are compassionate educators, encouraging each child’s respect for self, others, and nature
