Thank you for registering for our Fall Wilderness Survival Basics with Wilderness Awareness School in Duvall, Washington. We are excited to meet you at Linne Doran, Wilderness Awareness School’s 40-acre campus.

Fall Wilderness Survival Basics

When:
Saturday, September 19th; 9am-5pm
Sunday, September 20th; 9am-5pm 

Please arrive by 8:45am and be prepared to start at 9am.

Where: Linne Doran is located about fifteen minutes outside of Duvall in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. You can find us via Google Maps or also view driving directions here.

What to Expect:
We spend time outside as well as in covered structures. When you leave your car, please bring all the food and gear you need to be out the entire day. Be prepared to dress in layers so that you can adjust easily (see attached gear list). We hike about 1-2 miles during the class day, at times off trail. Expect that you may get muddy and wet.

We will spend significant time outside regardless of the weather. We encourage you to be prepared for all types of weather and bring several layers so that you can be comfortable throughout the class.

While this class is focused, it will also be very enjoyable. We want to push the edge of your knowledge and comfort zones to maximize learning and fun. We strive to balance theory with hands-on practice in a safe learning environment.

We will cover many topics including:

  • The Big Four Survival Skills: Shelter, Fire, Water, and Food; 
  • Survival Gear
  • Navigation and Signaling
  • Survival Mindset and Awareness
  • Survival vs. Bushcraft
  • Survival Skills as a gateway to deep connection to the natural world
  • What to Practice when you go home.

Health Precautions
We ask all participants to stay home if they have signs or symptoms of Covid-19. Please see the following Dept. of Health Guidelines for an updated list of symptoms. All students are asked to quarantine or isolate if they have symptoms or a Covid exposure per the most up to date state and county guidelines. Please note that masks may be required OR may be optional. We will send an update about current health and safety requirements 2 weeks before the start date.

Facilities
Our Linne Doran campus includes Cedar Lodge, our indoor classroom and meeting space, as well as several outdoor classrooms including a large yurt and our outdoor classroom. There are porta-potties on the property. Linne Doran has limited cell reception and no internet access. 

Participants are welcome to camp on our property on Saturday evening. Accommodations are rustic: there are simple campsites, potable water, and firewood provided.

If you would like more modern accommodations, there are some Airbnb/VRBO type accommodations nearby, as well as a Tolt McDonald Park (20 minutes away) for large RV set-ups. We do not have space for RV’s or for campers that are larger than a standard pickup truck.

Food: Food is not provided for this course. Please bring a lunch and snack food for each day. We do not have any way for you to refrigerate or heat your food, so please plan accordingly. Instruction will end by 5pm on Saturday (or earlier depending on the class). If you choose to camp at Linne Doran overnight, you may cook dinner/breakfast on the property. Please bring your own stove and cooking vessels, as well as a cooler if needed. There are also great restaurants in town; your instructors can give you their recommendations.

GEAR PACKING LIST

Please bring the following items. This list is designed with your comfort and safety in mind and takes into account the variable weather possibilities during summer in Western Washington. 

  • 2 face masks
  • 2-Liters of water (Platypus, 1L Metal bottles, etc.)
  • Recommended but not required: 4”-fixed blade knife with sheath (sharp, full-tang, fixed blade). Knives are available for purchase at the time of online registration or by emailing [email protected] up to the Thursday before your program date. Knives will NOT be available for sale once you arrive at your program.
  • Work gloves
  • Notebook and pen/pencil
  • Your own mug for tea/coffee
  • Daypack (to carry lunch, water, notebook, and extra layers)
  • 25’ of parachute cord (1/8” diameter rope)
  • Clothing that is appropriate for the weather. The key to being prepared is having multiple layers that you can add/remove during the day. Depending on the time of year, this could include: 
    • Lightweight pants and long-sleeved shirt (for bug/sun protection)
    • Synthetic long underwear top and bottom (not cotton) 
    • Wool or fleece pants (not cotton)
    • Wool or fleece jacket (not cotton)
    • Rain jacket, rain pants, and rain hat
    • Wool socks
    • Warm hat
    • Gloves
    • Appropriate footwear (We will be walking between 1-2 miles during the day)

Optional Gear for Those Camping Overnight

  • Tent with rain fly and ground tarp
  • Sleeping bag and pad (with temperature rating appropriate for season)
  • Toiletries and personal medication
  • Flashlight
  • Food
  • Camp stove
  • Cooler
