
Wilderness Awareness School is seeking new members to join our Board of Trustees. We are a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to helping youth and adults cultivate healthy relationships with nature, community, and self.
We are a small, engaged Board (5–8 members) that partners with a highly experienced leadership team. This is a governance-focused, strategic role—Board members provide oversight, guidance, and long-term vision, while day-to-day operations are led by staff.
Who We’re Looking For
We are especially interested in individuals who:
- Are deeply aligned with our mission and values
- Have prior nonprofit board or governance experience (strongly preferred)
- Are comfortable contributing at a strategic level rather than in an operational role
- Bring professional expertise that complements the current Board
Priority Areas of Expertise
- Finance (high priority; opportunity to grow into Treasurer role)
- Marketing and communications
- Legal
What Board Members Do
- Help guide organizational strategy and long-term direction
- Provide fiduciary oversight and ensure financial health
- Support and evaluate the Executive Director
- Serve as thoughtful ambassadors and help strengthen the organization’s visibility and and community relationships
What Board Members Do Not Do
- Board members do not engage in day-to-day operations
- There is no requirement to help with fundraising
Commitment
- Approximately 6 Board meetings per year (90 min, held remotely)
- Annual in-person Board retreat (6 hours) in Duvall, WA
- 4 to 6, 1-on-1 calls with Executive Director per year to discuss, strategize and provide input
- Preparation for meetings and occasional committee participation as needed
