By continuing to hone their naturalist and survival skills, youth ages 10 to 13 deepen their awareness and connection to the natural world, each other, and themselves. Our Ravens are guided into experiences that amplify their skills and comfort in nature, fostering their confidence and overall development as they enter their teen years.
Knives and tools take center stage at Ravens, where our highly skilled instructors lead class days focused on:
- Knife safety and carving
- Fire by friction and other methods
- Navigating the land with a compass
- Harvesting and using wild plants
- Making cordage, baskets, and other useful tools

This program builds on what students learn in our Jays and Crow programs. Students need one of the following prerequisites to be eligible:
- One year of experience at any WAS program, or
- Concurrent registration in any WAS program, or
- Comparable experience with other outdoor and/or naturalist programs
Our Educational Philosophy:
Our signature Coyote Mentoring methods draw the learning out of our students rather than forcing it in. Curiosity is strategically ignited, and mentors keep a keen eye on their students, looking for moments of awe and opportunities for passion to grow. Our curriculum focuses on:
- Providing fun, hands-on opportunities for children to get outside and to learn about the natural world
- Engaging play-based class content that adapts to the seasons, as well as to our students’ curiosities and interests
- Nurturing our students in their journey of learning and growth in nature while building social and emotional skills within a supportive community of students and staff
- Encouraging creative thinking rather than simply providing answers. Our experienced instructors help students develop problem-solving skills and critical thinking, fostering a deeper level of curiosity, learning, and connection.

Our Instructional Staff:
- Follow a targeted 1:10 adult to student ratio
- Are highly-skilled nature-connected humans who practice survival skills in their free time.
- Are trained as Coyote Mentors with current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications
