Become a Summer Camp Instructor!
Wilderness Awareness School offers a wide variety of day camps, skills camps, overnight camps, and expeditions for campers age 6-18. As a member of our team of nature mentors and instructors, you will:
- Make a difference by helping kids connect with the natural world
- Learn to be a “Coyote Mentor” and ignite kids’ passion, curiosity, and gifts
- Develop and deepen your nature connection and mentoring skills
- Be part of the Wilderness Awareness School mission to help children and adults cultivate healthy relationships with nature, community, and self
Our Teaching Philosophy
Coyote Mentoring utilizes a variety of teaching styles that focus on how children naturally learn. The result is what we call an “invisible school” where kids experience fun and games in nature without realizing how much they’re learning.
Children’s lives are becoming more and more screen-based and a vast majority of their time is spent indoors. Wild spaces are shrinking, and our impact on the planet is reaching a breaking point. It is more urgent than ever for people of all ages and backgrounds, especially children, to experience and fall in love with the natural world.
Become a Nature Instructor
In the quickly growing industry of Forest Kindergartens and nature-based education, there is an increasing need for skilled, diverse, and experienced instructors. As one of the country’s oldest and most respected nature schools, many of our students and staff have gone on to become leaders in the industry.
We strive to have a diverse population of staff that represents the students we work with because we recognize the importance of representation in creating a welcoming space for all children outside.

Summer Camp Opportunities at Wilderness Awareness School
Each camp program is one week, and summer staff may work a variety of camps and locations throughout the summer, depending on their skills, experience, preferences, and availability.
New summer applicants will primarily be considered for Nature Adventure Day Camp Instructor and Backup Instructor positions, as these are the backbone of our flagship camp program, and already require a full week of Staff Training.
Summer Camp Directors, Program Coordinators, Nature Skills, Overnight, and Expedition positions require additional experience and will require additional training/planning. Applicants with interests or previous experience may be considered and are encouraged to indicate in their application and interview if they believe they might be a good fit for these positions.
