What to Expect
We will likely be spending all of our time outdoors under rustic-covered teaching spaces. Be prepared to dress in layers so that you can adjust easily. Expect that you may get muddy and dirty – perhaps more so than you have since you were a child (or ever)!!
Summer weather in western Washington can be sunny and warm with temperatures in the
70’s-80’s F, and it can also rain, with temperatures dropping significantly. We are in the foothills at 900 feet so it is usually cooler than in Seattle. We will be spending all of our time outside regardless of the weather. We encourage you to be prepared for all types of weather and bring several layers (including top and bottom rain gear, and waterproof shoes/boots) so that you can be comfortable throughout the class.
We recommend that participants be as present (physically and mentally) as possible during Primal Pride, and not plan to leave the workshop unless it is essential. Mobile phone reception at Linne Doran is variable. There is no computer/internet access at Linne Doran. You’ve set time and money aside to be here connecting with other Queer folks in the wild, and we want you to make the most of it!
Safety – We strive to foster a safe, inclusive environment for all queer / LGBTQ+ people. All staff and volunteers for this program are themselves queer / LGBTQ+. We will use preferred pronouns. Trans people are especially welcome. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to Prince. [email protected]
Wilderness Awareness School Health Guidelines
Facilities
Personal facilities for your use include several port-a-potties, hand wash stations, drinking water, and outdoor showers. We have a flush toilet and private bathroom for folks with special needs.
Camping
We are offering free camping Friday and Saturday night. We strongly encourage participants to camp with us since we will be having long hours each day, going as late as 9:30pm in our evening sessions.
If you would like more modern accommodations, there are some Airbnb/VRBO type accommodations nearby, as well as a Tolt McDonald Park (20 minutes away) for large RV set-ups. We do not have space for RV’s or for campers that are larger than a standard pickup truck.
Food
Our amazing queer cooks will be providing meals starting with dinner on Friday night through brunch on Sunday. We will do our best to support the dietary requirements you supplied when filling in your application. We regularly support gluten-free, vegan/vegetarian, grain-free, and dairy-free diets. If you have stricter needs beyond this please contact us to see if we can support it.
GEAR PACKING LIST
Please bring the following items. This list is designed with your comfort and safety in mind and takes into account the variable weather possibilities during summer in Western Washington.
- 1-liter water bottles and/or hydration pack
- Daypack (to carry lunch, water, notebook, and extra layers)
- Notebook and pen/pencil for journaling
- Mug for Tea/Coffee (Travel mug with lid is most convenient)
- Bowl and Plate, and eating utensils so we don’t have to use paper/plastic products
- Clothing that can be worn outside, get dirty, etc. appropriate to the weather. The key to being prepared is having multiple layers that you can add/remove during the day. Depending on the time of year, this could include:
- Lightweight pants and a long-sleeved shirt (for bug/sun protection)
- Wool or fleece jacket (not cotton)
- Rain jacket, rain pants, and rain hat (we hope it’s sunny and hope is not a plan.)
- sun hat and sunscreen if desired
- Appropriate footwear (for adventuring on and off trail, close-toed) It’s also nice to have lounging around footwear. Bare feet are ok when the activity and area is appropriate.
- Swimsuit or quick dry clothing you can get wet in
- Crazy Creek or similar light, packable chair – optional and especially important if you are uncomfortable sitting on the ground or on a stump!
- Ear plugs/ear protection – you may hear fireworks from our neighbors or snoring from the tent nearby.
- Watch or timepiece- ideally, not your phone. We request phones stay packed away so we can take a break from the tech world. We will also seek to be in the moment and have a natural flow.
- Fixed blade knife for carving and projects – optional; some activities will use knives. We will have loaners.
- Crafts or fun things for free time. The weekend will be pretty full, but there will be some free time to do your own thing.
Camping Gear
- Tent with rain fly and ground tarp
- Sleeping bag and pad (with temperature rating appropriate for the season)
- Toiletries and personal medication
- Flashlight/headlamp
